Birm media

For the purpose of reducing dissolved iron and manganese compounds from raw water supplies, Birm® is an effective and affordable media. It can be applied to pressurized or gravity-fed water treatment systems. Birm filter media serves as an insoluble catalyst to speed up the reaction between the iron compounds and dissolved oxygen (D.O.). Due to the concentration of free carbon dioxide in groundwater, the dissolved iron is typically in the non-filterable ferrous bicarbonate state and cannot be removed. Birm accelerates the oxidation reaction of Fe++ to Fe+++ and creates ferric hydroxide, which precipitates and may be easily filtered. Birm functions as a catalyst between oxygen and the soluble iron compounds.
